About the Trail

The Brisbane Valley Rail Trail will recycle the old Brisbane Valley rail line. The 148 kilometre recreation trail from Ipswich to Blackbutt will provide walkers, cyclists and horse riders an opportunity to experience the history and landscape of the Brisbane River Valley.

The trail will follow the old rail line along the western side of the Brisbane River and will travel through farming landscapes, native and plantation forests, rural, residential and country towns. Currently the Fernvale to Lowood and the Linville to Blackbutt sections of the trail are open.

Cyclists, walkers and horse riders will be catered for by a range of services, accommodation and facilities in towns along the trail. Due for completion in 2012, it will be the one of the longest rail trails in Australia.

Trail Sections

When completed, the trail will start in west Ipswich at the Wulkuraka rail station, although you can start and finish anywhere along the trail. After passing through the outskirts of Ipswich, forest and rural lands, the trail reaches Fernvale (22 km), on the Brisbane Valley highway and onto Lowood.

The trail continues north through Coominya (43 km), before running parallel to the Brisbane Valley highway at Esk (66 km), where a range of accommodation and public facilities are available. Accommodation is also available in Toogoolawah (85 km), Harlin (100 km) and Moore.

A further 7 kilometres on from Moore is the historic town of Linville, where the trail begins its climb up the Balfour Range to cross the Bicentennial National Trail at Commissioners View outside Benarkin (137 km) and on to Blackbutt (148 km).

The following sections of the Brisbane Valley Rail Trail are now open to the public:
